Admission Requirements

Minimum requirements for entering the DPO scheme are:
Participants must hold either a STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck or a Regulation III/1 - III /2 - III/3 Engine certificate. Valid certificate must be presented on the first day of the course as proof.
Prospective Offshore DPO's on the new scheme who are in the process of training for an STCW certificate may complete Induction/basic course (Phase A),60 DP sea time days (Phase B) and the Simulator/Advanced course (Phase C).The watch-keeping training (Phase D) and (Phase E)can only be completed after they hold an appropriate STCW certificate of competency. A letter from an employing company or approved college must be presented on the first day of the course as proof.
Participants NOT fulfilling the above are allowed to participate on the course, but only as a 'DP awareness' student. The certificate will state 'DP awareness' only. The course will not be considered as a part of the DP operator training scheme and the participant will not be allowed for future training as a DPO.

The Dynamic Positioning Induction Course offered by Lerus in Turkey marks the initial step for maritime professionals into the Nautical Institute's Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) Training and Certification Scheme. Accredited by the Nautical Institute (NI), this course is designed to equip DP operator trainees and users of DP systems with foundational knowledge and skills in dynamic positioning. Utilizing Kongsberg Maritime simulators, the course provides a comprehensive introduction to DP systems, including their setup, operation, and the practical handling of associated equipment. Trainees learn to recognize and respond to alarms, warnings, and informational messages from the DP system, ensuring they can effectively manage DP operations aboard DP-equipped vessels. The course aims to relate the DP installation to the ship's system, covering aspects such as power supply, maneuvering facilities, and the available position reference systems, thereby providing a holistic understanding of DP operations in relation to the vessel's overall functioning.

The training curriculum is based on the guidelines of The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), covering theoretical sessions and practical exercises. This blend ensures that participants acquire a deep understanding of the principles of dynamic positioning, the various elements of a DP system, and the requirements for redundancy. Additionally, the course delves into the hazards associated with DP operations, particularly in deep water and diesel-electric DP vessel environments, preparing trainees for the complexities of real-world DP operations. By the completion of the course, participants are expected to have a solid foundation in dynamic positioning, enabling them to start accumulating DP sea time towards obtaining their DP logbook and advancing through the NI's DP operator certification process. This course is not only a crucial educational step but also a significant milestone for those looking to embark on or advance their career in dynamic positioning operations.

Frequently asked questions - DP Basic course

What is DP induction?

"DP Induction" is the first-stage training course for Dynamic Positioning (DP). Dynamic Positioning is a system employed on certain ships and offshore platforms, enabling them to automatically maintain their position and heading without anchoring, by using their own thrusters and propellers. It's vital in operations where precise positioning is essential or where anchoring isn't possible, such as deep-water oil drilling.

The DP Induction course offers an introduction to:

  1. The Basics of Dynamic Positioning: Understanding what DP is, its history, benefits, and applications.
  2. Components of the DP System: Learning about the various hardware and software elements, including position reference sensors, computer controllers, power management, and thruster systems.
  3. Operational Overview: An introduction to the control console, setting up a DP system, and the basic modes of operation.
  4. Safety Aspects: Recognizing potential dangers, understanding alarms, and the significance of emergency procedures.

What topics are covered in the Dynamic Positioning Induction Course?

The Dynamic Positioning Induction Course provides an in-depth introduction to the fundamental concepts of Dynamic Positioning (DP). Topics include the history and development of DP, basic principles of DP operations, components and subsystems of a DP system, types of position reference systems, alarms, warnings, and emergency procedures, as well as hands-on simulator training to familiarize participants with real-world DP scenarios.
