Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course (NI DP Advanced)

The Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course, recognized as "Phase C" in The Nautical Institute's DPO Training and Certification Scheme, is an advanced level of dynamic positioning training designed to refine the skills and knowledge of those who have successfully completed the DP Induction Course. Held in Singapore, this 5-day intensive training immerses participants in simulated DP operations, including errors and failures, through practical exercises on Kongsberg DP simulators. This course is intended for maritime professionals who aim to deepen their understanding of dynamic positioning systems, focusing on the conduct of typical DP operations, risk assessment, and the development of contingency plans to cover all foreseeable system failures.

Throughout the course, participants are given the opportunity to practice all aspects of DP operations planning and execution, including the setup and operation of a redundant DP system. The training methodology combines theoretical sessions based on the guidelines from The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) with hands-on simulator exercises. These exercises are designed to simulate realistic DP-based operations, giving participants the chance to undertake roles and responsibilities akin to those onboard DP vessels. This approach ensures that deck officers and DPOs can effectively manage DP control, including risk assessment and preparation of plans for routine and emergency situations.

Upon completion of the DP Simulator Course, participants will have demonstrated their ability to carry out comprehensive DP operations, effectively respond to DP system alarms, warnings, and failures, and stabilize the vessel's position after a failure. This course not only prepares participants for the projected DP operation but also emphasizes the importance of practical operation of associated equipment, such as sensors, thrusters, and position reference systems.
